Louise’s Story
Conflict has ravaged Louise’s home in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for years. She has lost her husband, three children, her home and livelihood.
Louise and her surviving children now live in Buporo Camp, along with nearly 4,000 other refugees. Louise is a leader in her community. She is president of the camp’s hygiene committee as well as a member of the women’s forum and the protection committee.
If there’s a woman on our planet who shows what Oxfam is all about, it’s Louise. Her resourcefulness, resilience and compassion in facing the challenges of extreme poverty are inspirational.
In Buporo camp, Oxfam has installed four tap stands, 62 blocks of latrines, a metallic tank, and one concrete tank on the hill above the camp. The water is filtered, cleaned and tested to make sure it’s safe to drink.
Louise can speak to the fact that in Buporo, water truly is life. Until Oxfam’s emergency team installed water systems in camps and communities, people had no choice but to walk long distances for water or share the limited amount available in the neighbouring community.
