Oxfam Canada Partners with Hot Docs to Present Powerful Films on Issues Facing Women and Girls

April 30, 2017

Oxfam Canada is proud to announce that it has partnered with Hot Docs Canadian Documentary Film Festival – North America’s largest documentary film festival – to present two powerful films on important issues facing women and girls, in Canada and around the world.

The films include the world premiere of A Better Man – a brave film from directors Attiya Khan and Lawrence Jackman that shifts the conversation on abuse to get to the root causes of intimate partner violence; and Sunday Beauty Queen – a compelling narrative from director Baby Ruth Villarama that confronts the challenges faced by migrant women and how they reclaim their dignity.

Julie Delahanty, Executive Director for Oxfam Canada, said: “Documentary film is a powerful tool to create social change by compelling us all to engage in important – yet sometimes difficult – conversations and to see the world through someone else’s eyes. We are thrilled to collaborate with Hot Docs to present genuine stories about real people experiencing the issues at the heart of our work.”

“These documentaries provide a new perspective on issues that Oxfam works on both overseas and in Canada – work to  end violence against women and girls; to support migrant women; and to advocate for work to be paid, equal and valued.  It is an honour to work alongside HotDocs to screen these powerful films.”

Hot Docs Executive Director Brett Hendrie, said: “We are proud to collaborate with Oxfam Canada for this year’s Hot Docs. Now especially, audiences are seeking voices and stories that will help them make sense of a turbulent world. We are proud to bring to Toronto insights and inspiration from the world’s most talented filmmakers, many of whom share with Oxfam Canada a passion and commitment for social change.”

Sunday Beauty Queen will be presented on Saturday April 29th at 9:30pm the Isabel Bader Theatre. The World Premiere of A Better Man will be presented on Sunday April 30th at 6:30 pm at the Isabel Bader Theatre, and will be followed by a private reception hosted by Oxfam Canada with guests from the A Better Man film crew and the National Film Board of Canada.
