Hurricane Matthew

October 1, 2016

Hurricane Matthew, a dangerous storm whose top sustained winds have sometimes reached 160 miles per hour, is churning through the Caribbean, with Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, and the Bahamas in its path.

Torrential rains are expected, with 25 inches—possibly up to 40 in places—predicted for southern Haiti. High winds will likely topple trees, damage homes, and trigger mudslides and power outages, and the slow pace of the storm along its path—prolonging wind and downpours—could intensify its impact.

Oxfam staff and partners in Haiti, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic are standing by, poised to fan out into affected areas when the storm subsides to find out what kind of aid is needed most urgently, and where.
