End the Saudi Arms Deal
End the Saudi Arms Deal
TELL THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:
The war in Yemen has been raging for more than five years. This devastating humanitarian crisis is a direct result of the ongoing war, and the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.
At the moment, Canada sells weapons to one of the parties to the conflict – Saudi Arabia – because of an arms deal that predates this government. Credible media reports have already suggested that Canadian weapons sold to Saudi Arabia are being used in the devastating war on Yemen.
Canada has been a leader in providing life-saving humanitarian assistance to Yemen – but it is doing so while simultaneously arming one of the parties to the conflict. Canadian weapons risk being used to commit serious human rights violations and cause more suffering to innocent civilians. In the recent past, the Government of Canada has appeared open to finding a way to cancel or suspend the arms deal. It is time for the Government of Canada to cancel its arms deal with Saudi Arabia. Yemen can’t wait.
Did you know that:
- Three civilians are killed every day due to the conflict and 80% of the population is in need of humanitarian assistance or protection.
- There has been a 63% increase in incidents of gender-based violence – including rape and sexual assault – since the conflict began in 2015.
- The destruction of infrastructure, such as water and sanitation systems, caused by airstrikes on civilian targets means that women and girls have to travel further in dangerous settings to collect water.
- Hungry families are resorting to desperate measures to feed themselves – including marrying off their young daughters.
The humanitarian situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate, but you can help make a difference. Let’s unite our voices and show the Canadian government that we support an end to the arms deal with Saudi Arabia.
Email the Minister of Foreign Affairs today and tell the Government of Canada to cancel its arms deal with Saudi Arabia immediately.
Yemen can't wait.
